Who I am

“You can do nothing about tomorrow. It is yet to come. However, tomorrow is in large part determined by what you do today. So make today a masterpiece.”

—    John Wooden

I’m a born and raised Oregonian from the small-town of Vernonia. I’m a proud graduate of the University of Oregon and the Robert D. Clark Honors College. Any conversation about me really starts and ends there. In my time in Eugene, Ore. I met amazing people, had the time of my life and fell in love with journalism.

I sharpened my teeth at The Oregon Daily Emerald. By my senior year, I was the sports editor. I had the pleasure of covering two years of college football and witnessed the reinstatement of the university’s baseball team. I worked with some amazing journalists while there. I look forward to seeing where their careers take them.

When I tell people what I do, they like to make comments about the sorry state of newspapers. I maintain journalism isn’t dying — it’s just changing. There is no question times are tough, but there will always be a need for a journalist getting to the center of the issue and bringing the story to the readers in a fresh, concise way. I’m excited to be a part of the wave that will work to shape how we read and cover news.

I am a newspaper lover. Yes, a computer is never far from my hands (nor is my iPhone), but the feeling of pulling open a paper is hard to beat.

I am a fan of the stories people tell through sports. Sometimes the most interesting thing that happens isn’t the game itself but how a person got there. I’m also a fan of the raw emotion we witness in sports. Don’t tell me it’s just a game after interviewing a crying high school senior who just lost the state championship.

I am a baseball fan. The little things in the sport give me immeasurable pleasure to watch. A perfectly executed hit and run is hard to beat. I aspire to one day to cover a Major League Baseball team.

There’s an extremely long list of things I would like to be better at and do in my career. I want to work at being the best photographer I can be. Photography fascinates me. I also want to maintain a blog. This site is the beginning of that. On the large end of things, my career goal is to cover professional and college sports for a daily metropolitan paper. I want to be in the thick of things.

Currently I’m a sports reporter at The News-Register in McMinnville, Ore. I mostly cover high school sports, and it’s great fun. The more time I spend around the community and the outlying towns, the more I come to enjoy living here. The people are friendly, and there’s always a good story to tell.

I love what I do.
